Versal sent me a very nice rejection. They said my story made it to the editorial roundtable and was “one of the finest” pieces of fiction they received, yet alas they were passing. At least their note gave me more confidence in the story.

Baltimore Review

Got an interesting rejection from the Baltimore Review. I submitted a short short, but they said they weren’t sure this was the complete story as it was only three pages long. So much for brevity.

The irony of lit mag contests

Random thought: Winning a writing contest sponsored by a lit mag is often considered more prestigious than getting published in the same journal from the regular submission pool. But when you think about it, it’s oftentimes harder to get picked out of the regular non-paying slush pile than it is winning the contest, if only because there are fewer paying contest entries and many more hundreds if not thousands of regular submissions. Yet university search committee love applicants who’ve won contests and every writer puts contest results in their bio. Am I crazy, or are contests overvalued? As one writer put it, by paying the contest fee you’re basically paying for less competition. So save your money. Use that $15 or $25 entry fee to buy yourself a nice meal. Trust me. You’ll thank me later.

Form rejection from LA Review. That kinda hurt. I thought the story was right up their alley, being about California and being somewhat unconventional.

Ellipsis

Received a lightning fast rejection from an undergrad at Ellipsis. Do they know who I am? Oh, wait. I forgot. I’m no one. The burn, oh the burn. Submission season has started up again. Good luck to all you submitters. I’m hoping to be more strategic with my submissions and less of a whore. Who am I kidding? Give me two contributor’s copies and I’ll do anything. Just no tongue.

Rejection RIP

I haven’t posted in a while, which doesn’t mean I haven’t been receiving rejections. I will no longer be blogging my rejections. There’s only so much one can say about rejections. I will continue to update my publications page and write the occasional post, but otherwise farewell rejection. It was nice while it lasted. Peace.

I wrote a story about a woman and her goiter. An editor who passed on the story said it might be construed as insensitive to people with that medical condition.

I received one of the strangest rejections today in response to a query. The editor said she “loved” my submission, thought it was “fresh and witty and fantastic.” That said, my submission was being rejected. That definitely left me scratching my head. On a side note, the poetry editor at Gulf Coast has some sneaky submission tips.
